Talk Abstract:
The Lucid Air all-electric sedan combines forward-looking design with groundbreaking technology to establish an entirely new class of luxury vehicle. As a new entrant to the EV market, Lucid Motors has adopted an innovative simulation-centered design approach, exploiting the best-in-class practices and tools, without being hindered by legacy methods. This allowed Lucid to develop the Air from scratch in just a couple of years. The pioneering approach includes housing the teams working on each discipline involved in electric vehicle design — electromagnetics, thermal, structural, aerodynamic, etc. — in a single room to encourage collaboration from the beginning of the design process. Methods to deliver the simultaneous optimization of the different subsystems of the vehicle in a multi-level and multi-disciplinary context are being deployed with the aid of best-in-class tools from partner vendors. The final product, the Air, offers incredible performance and dynamics, yet still offers remarkable space and comfort while meeting all regulatory requirements. In this section, we describe how Multi-Physics simulation and in particular ANSYS have been implemented and leveraged at Lucid Motors.

Biography:
David Moseley is Director of Powertrain for the California EV startup Lucid Motors, where he is responsible for the powertrain of the vehicle, covering battery, power electronics, motors and gearboxes. Lucid’s first product, currently undergoing alpha testing, is the head-turning Lucid Air, which will be described in more detail during this presentation. Previously he was Technical Director for EnginSoft in the UK, primarily devising engineering optimization processes for a range of industry sectors, including Formula One, wind energy, civil engineering and automotive.

David’s background is primarily in automotive structural crashworthiness and occupant restraints performance: in research, for vehicle manufacturers and as a consultant. These roles covered a period during which the safety of vehicle occupants was transformed by innovative engineering in secondary and, more recently, primary safety. Time to head West and join the next revolution ..

David graduated in Theoretical Physics from the University of York. He holds a Ford Technical Achievement Award for engineering process development, and has been a keynote speaker at a range of events in China, India, Europe and the USA.
